So refreshingly unique - The rapid rise of Gotye

Its been a while since a song has had such an impact on people and created such a positive stir. Cue Goytes new track featuring Kimbra. “Somebody I used to Know” has been spreading like social media wildfire over the past few weeks and has found a keen home on not just alternative radio waves but on commercial stations across Australia.

Why this song? Why now? I believe its simple. This is the first piece of truly original Australian music our ears have been blessed with in far too long. All the music being thrown at our generation at the moment consists of samples of songs of our past or riffs that make you think “gosh this sounds familiar”. Nothing really new. Nothing really groundbreaking. Nothing truly original.

Enter Goyte and Kimbra.

“Somebody I used to Know” not only combines haunting yet simple lyrics and structure but a sound that cannot even be categorised with other songs currently being released. It is its own genre, its own little marvel of music. Simple, heartfelt, amazingly good.

I have to say, the new album is amazing but in its whole, not anywhere near as original as that one song sounded the first time I heard it. There are elements of the 80s on the album, a touch of folk, a touch of pop and within some verses even a touch of motown sounds.

Goyte should be praised for taking a chance on a song that has captured a generation. Hopefully he acts as inspiration for all musos out there – no more sampling please guys – lets get originality back into the Australian music scene.
